The Intelligent Divorce Taking Care of Yourself eBook Mark R Banschick David Tabatsky Reviews
Dr. Mark Banschick's 2nd Volume "The Intelligent Divorce Taking Care of Yourself" is another valuable contribution to the self-help literature on the process of separation and divorce. In this book Dr. Banschick continues to demonstrate his expertise and his commitment to the well-being of children and families. All too often, the emotional regression and stress (including financial stress) that naturally takes place during a divorce results in inattention to family members' emotional needs. Rather then frame the problem in black and white terms, we understand that attending to both the children's AND the parents' needs are critically important to pay attention to in this process. All too often, this equation gets lopsided resulting in misplaced focus and potentially damaging behaviors. Powerful psychological defenses are erected during change and trauma that one needs to be aware of in order to preserve the well-being of all family members involved. The natural process of change and the accompanying mourning process can go awry all too easily. Divorce is one of the most significant life stresses one might encounter. Parents have unique needs during this process and "The Intelligent Divorce Taking Care of Yourself" is a readable, accessible guide which can be of use for both mothers and fathers. Parents' relationships with children and with each other are vulnerable to deterioration during this process but there is much one can do to avoid that - Dr. Banschick includes useful tools, tables and resources to help one with self-care.
Divorce is a pain not matter which end you are on. While this book had some good advice I found Athol Kay to be a much better explaination to what went wrong. The most important thing is to pick a lawyer who doesn't want to drag your misery through the mud. That means being the first to leave, planning in advance and finding the lawyer you need before you pull the trigger. Don't just say "I want a divorce". Have the papers drawn up and hand them to her as you make you declaration so she knows it's serious business.
This book tells it like it is. The children come first. The divorce is not their fault, so leave them out of it. It is your job to be a good parent, not the kids' job to be a "friend" or "human shield". For those of you contemplating,in the middle of, or out of, divorce, put this book at the top of your reading list.
That in the busyness and stress of all the upheaval that is going on, here is a book that relieves you of the guilt you might feel when you take time out for you. If you don't look after yourself well, you won't be looking after anyone else successfully either.
This is a must-read for everyone who finds themselves in this terrible situation. It is an easy read, one that goes too quickly. It is a book that you will need to refer back to throughout the process. You will find that some, but not all, of its contents relate to you. However, as things progress in your divorce, re-reading chapters will become necessary. Good-luck.
